Dahlia Special School & Autism Centre

Mr. Fredrick Terah Ambani

Founder Dahlia Special Needs School and Autism Center

A Builder by Trade, A Father by Purpose

I am a multi-skilled construction professional and team player with strong functional and technical expertise developed over more than three decades in the industry. My strength lies in identifying needs and transforming visions into safe, sustainable, and practical solutions. But nothing could have prepared me for the personal journey that led me into the world of special needs.

As a father, my number one priority has always been the safety of my family, especially my Special needs daughter. I’ve watched her climb to dangerous heights without fear. I’ve had to be constantly alert, day and night, just to keep her safe. I’ve seen her experience meltdowns that no one else could understand. There were times we avoided going out in public for fear of embarrassment—whether from her eating other people’s food, not being fully potty trained, or facing judgment from those who simply didn’t understand.

Over two years ago, we began searching for a special needs school and therapy services in Kitale, Kakamega, Eldoret and Kisumu. Months passed with no success. We traveled across the country, eventually finding options in Nairobi—over 400 kilometers from home. The cost, distance, and emotional toll were overwhelming. And yet, we were making incredible progress through homeschooling, following a strict routine, diet, and therapy plan.

That’s when the idea took root: to create a space in her honor, where children like ours could learn and grow safely—and where parents and families could find the support they so desperately need. Together with my partner, a medical professional, my dear Daughter Dr. Terah (MD) and through the lessons we’ve learned as parents and family, we co-founded Dahlia Special Needs School and Autism Center.

Using my construction experience, I personally designed the facility with safety and functionality of a special needs child as the top priorities. Our center is set in a quiet, calming environment—ideal for learning and therapy. It is built like a home, because it must feel like a home: safe, welcoming, and tailored to the unique needs of every child.

To our dedicated team, current families, and beloved children—we thank you for trusting us and walking this journey with us. And to all aspiring parents, especially fellow fathers: we see you. We understand fears, silence, strength. You are not alone. We invite you to visit Dahlia, to see the care, the professionalism, and the heart we pour into every child. Together, we can build not only safer spaces—but better futures.

With deep gratitude,
Fredrick Terah Ambani

Ms. Phillis Mutembete, FNP/PMH

Co- Founder Dahlia Special Needs School and Autism Center

I am a dual-certified Family and Psychiatric Mental Health Nurse Practitioner with over two and a half decades of experience in healthcare. My clinical journey has taken me through a wide range of settings including Emergency room, Bedside Hospitals, correctional facilities, FQHC primary care, pediatrics clinics, inpatient and crisis psychiatric care, and professor at Grand Canyon University School of Healthcare in Teaching Nurse practitioner’s students and supervision of their internship at my clinic setting. I also have extensive experience working with children in both clinical and community settings in both family and behavioral clinics.

My journey with special needs began more than five years ago, when my daughter was diagnosed with autism. Like many parents, I had dreams of watching my child grow up to thrive, excel in sports, break barriers, and surpass the limitations I had faced. Receiving her diagnosis was devastating. I went through a period of denial, heartbreak, and even suffered a mental breakdown. But through the grace of God and the unwavering support of my family and friends, we began the journey forward—with love, determination, and hope.

Our path included over four years of intensive ABA therapy in the United States, and even a venture into stem cell therapy in India. Despite our efforts, progress was slow and often painful. Two years ago, we took a leap of faith and moved to Kenya to try homeschooling. Though we attempted to integrate into inclusive school settings and received positive reports, we knew, as her parents, that our child’s needs weren’t truly being met. Homeschooling showed us remarkable improvements—and gave us hope.

That experience inspired us to take a bold step. We founded Dahlia Special Needs Center—a place built from both professional expertise and lived parental experience. A place where every child is truly seen, understood, and supported.

As Co-Founder, I have helped shape Dahlia school into a center that uses a holistic, science-based approach, grounded in proven international curriculums. We develop individualized, personalized programs for each child—because every child is unique. I’m proud to say we are among the first centers in the region where 100% of our staff are professionally trained in special needs care.

I am deeply grateful to God and to our extraordinary team at Dahlia special school, who pour compassion and clinical excellence into everything they do. Our therapy center is expanding to offer services to children enrolled in other schools, ensuring that professional therapy is accessible to more families who need it.

To all current and future parents, families, and caregivers, I see you. I understand your pain, your frustration, and your hopes. Dahlia Special Needs Center was built with you in mind: a place of safety, professionalism, and genuine care—where your child will be nurtured, not just supervised.

Thank you for taking the time to read our story. Please reach out—we would love to connect, support each other, and celebrate every success, no matter how small.

Warm regards,
Phillis Mutembete, FNP/PMH
